By alexandriamotorco | Posted in Alexandria Chevrolet, Alexandria Motors, Automotive, Cadillac, Car Dealers, Chevrolet, OnStar on Monday, March 12th, 2012 at 6:35 PM

OnStar App

You’ve probably all seen the commercials on TV where the husband is standing in the driveway asking his wife who is boarding an airplane to unlock and lock their vehicle.  This isn’t  a magic trick just made for TV, it is part of OnStar’s new App called Remote Link.  Using it will enable you to create your own magic trick: starting your vehicle, unlocking, locking, turning on the lights and much more all from your phone.

As long as you have an active OnStar account and a smartphone you are in control of this little magic trick.  No black hat and bunny needed. Once downloaded OnStar MyLink App allows you to lock or unlock your doors, start your engine, check your tire pressure, check fuel levels, check oil life percentage, download directions (if subscribed to directions and connections) or speak to an advisor.  You are in control of your car.  And distance is no object.

Connect with your vehicle, wherever it is, whenever you want.  You can download and register the app at onstar.com/mobile.

The Wonders of the Blue Button!

By alexandriamotorco | Posted in Dealer Information on Tuesday, February 14th, 2012 at 5:06 PM

OnStarIt’s More than a Blue Button…..it’s OnStar!!!

Most people probably think of OnStar as being there for you in case of a crash.  But did you know if you lock your keys in your car, OnStar can also help you?  Or if you vehicle is stolen OnStar can track it down for you?  While most people think of OnStar as a safety feature this little blue button can do so much more for you. And when you link your Smart Phone to OnStar the capabilities of this button as almost endless!  Here are some of the great benefits OnStar provides:

Automatic Crash Response: Upon impact, built-in sensors automatically alert an OnStar Advisor of your specific critical details, such as the type and severity of your crash and your exact GPS location.  With GPS technology OnStar can notify emergency response services even if your cell phone has no signal.  Perhaps more important, if you’re unconscious or unable to communicate, an OnStar Advisor will respond for you and request help be sent right away.  This feature alone is priceless!  It can save your life, just ask our Office Controller Karen Root, it saved her life!

Emergency Services: If you need help, OnStar is ready to answer the call anytime.  Press the red Emergency button, located next to your Blue OnStar button, and you’ll get a priority connection to a specially trained Advisor who will contact the appropriate emergency provider and guide them right to your location.  When would you use this service? Crisis alert: If there’s a natural disaster, OnStar follows the news and will relay evacuation routes and the locations of other critical services, such as shleters, food, water, open gas stations and more.  OnStar will even help connect you with your family.  Good Samaritan and AMBER alert.  If you witness a problem on the road or have information related to an AMBER Alert, push the red Emergency button to report it.  OnStar will relay the information to the proper authorities or send hep.  First Assist. With this new features, a calm voice will offer potentially lifesaving assistance until medical help arrives.  Advisors are specially trained to help people dealing with chocking, breathing problems, childbirth or other emergencies.

No need to buy a navigation unit!  Turn-by-turn Navigation: You know the way.  Mostly.  Kind of.  Maybe not quite.  Or maybe not at all.  Whatever the situation, whether you’re going around the corner or across the country, OnStar can keep you on course.  Plus, with OnStar there’s more than one way to get the directions you want. With the simple push of your blue button, an Advisor downloads your destination via OnStar, and an automated voice calls out every turn along the way.  No need to enter an address; it’s all done for you. Have a navigation screen in your vehicle? With destination download, you can program and send destinations directly to your navigation screen using eNav or you can push your blue OnStar button and ask the Advisor to download directions to the screen-based navigation system in your car.  So if you are driving you can still get directions sent to you, instead of having to pull over.

eNav with Google Maps or MapQuest: Find your destination online and head out.  It’s that easy.  eNav forwards your Google Maps or MapQuest destination to your car.  Then simply call out the saved location when you’re ready to get where your going.  It’s fast and easy to get the directions you need delivered directly to your vehicle.  First, go to either Google Maps or MapQuest and enter your destination.  Next, for Google Maps, click “send” in the directions result, then select “car” in the pop-up window.  For MapQuest choose “send” from the drop-down menu and then select “sent to OnStar.”  Once you’re in your vehicle, press the Hands-free calling button and say “Virtual Advisor.”  Listen to the simple prompts, and you are on your way.

Hands-free Connections: Eyes on the road.  Hands on the wheel.  That’s the safe way to communicate when you travel.  And it’s the reason why OnStar offer two ways to make hands-free calls.  Hands-free calling: Built in to your vehicle, so it’s there for you during those times when your cell phone isn’t- whether you forgot it, the batter is low, or you can’t can’t reach it. Specially designed OnStar antenna keeps you connected in your vehicle with better receptions and fewer dropped calls in areas of limited service- for a more reliable connection than a cell phone.  Or use Bluetooth wireless technology and pair a Bluetooth device to your vehicle.

Security Services: Stolen Vehicle Assistance: Having your car stolen can make you angry, but it doesn’t have to leave you helpless. Just call 1.888.4.ONSTAR and an Advisor can connect you to the police and use GPS technology to help police locate your vehicle.  The authorities are updated on your car’s location, and OnStar continues working with them to help get it back.  Stolen Vehicle Slowdown: This industry-exclusive enhancement to Stolen Vehicle Assistance can help reduce dangerous high-speed chases and, or course, help return your vehicle in one piece.  Once a stolen vehicle has been located by an Advisor and law enforcement at the scene confirms the conditions are safe, OnStar can send a remote signal that gradually slows the vehicle to an idle speed.  Haha bad buys! Remote Ignition block.  Prevents the stolen vehicle from being restarted once the engine has been turned off.

Security Services: It’s a fact, sometimes bad things happen when you’re on the road.  Problem is, you never know when these things will go down.  OnStar is there to pick you up.  Remote door unlock. At one time, everyone’s locked their keys in the car.  With OnStar, you just call 1.888.4.ONSTAR and an Advisor will quickly send a remote signal that can unlock your car in minutes.  Remote horn and lights. Admit it, sometimes you can not remember where you parked the car?  call OnStar and they cans end a remote signal to activate your horn and lights to help you locate it.  Roadside assistance.  Flat tire? Out of gas? Just plain stranded? Push the blue Onstar button or call and an Advisor will direct a service provider to your exact GPS location.

Vehicle Diagnostics: Every month, OnStar automatically runs hundreds of diagnostic checks on key operating systems like the engine, StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, antilock brakes and air bags.  Then we deliver an easy-to-understand report right to your inbox.  A green icon next to a system means no issues were found.  a yellow icon tells you action is suggested and a red icon means immediate attention is needed.

All of that with one little blue button.  If you have any other questions regarding OnStar please stop in to see us.  Or if you would like to activate your OnStar services push the blue button and an Advisor will be pleased to help you.  Next week, we will blog about the OnStar MyLink feature.

Our year of giving back!

By alexandriamotorco | Posted in Alexandria Motors, Community Events on Monday, January 30th, 2012 at 9:49 PM

Here at Alexandria Motors we have a set of basic values that all of our employees strive to use each and every day that we come to work.  One of these values includes the value of being good community citizens.  This value states that we will give willingly to and are actively involved in the support of our communities, because they provide us our success.  In 2011, we decided to really embrace this value and here is the year looking back.

February 2011- Pop Can Wars benefiting United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties
This was a fun fundraising event that evoked a little competition between our sales and service department as well!  We had a competition between the departments to see who could collect the most pop cans during the month.  While some departments may have cheated and bought in cans from home they have been storing, we still allowed it since it was for a good cause.  At the end of the month we put all the cans into several garbage bags and took them to the recycling center here in town.  The bags were totalled for each department with the totals coming in at Service,Parts and Body Shop at 39 pounds of pop cans and the sales department at 30 pounds.  So the Service department took the first year victory.  All of the money that we received from recycling the cans then went to the United Way of Douglas and Pope Counties.  The Sales Department is out to take the victory this year though, so watch out service!!

March – April 2011 Oil Changes for a Cause benefiting Habitat for Humanity of Douglas County
From March 17-April 17th we ran oil changes for a cause.  We donated $1 for every oil changed performed during that month time period and donated it to Habitat for Humanity.  Bill Nettleton, owner of Alexandria Motors, Brooke Steinbring, and our service manager attended the Habitat for Humanity Hard Hat breakfast in May and we donated our check to them.  It was a great experience to hear from the families that have received a home from Habitat.  We look forward to raising even more money this year!

June 2011- Chevy Youth Baseball benefiting Alexandria Area Baseball Association
We partner with the Heartland Chevy Dealers on this great campaign and it is a lot of fun! We were present on opening day for one of the games for the Alexandria Area Baseball Association and presented them with a check for $500.  Our owner Bill Nettleton also threw out the first pitch.  We also supplied them with free t-shirts for the players, practice balls, coaching supplies, water bottles and more.  On top of all that they were also able to sell raffle tickets for $5 a piece where purchasers could have a chance at winning a brand new Chevy Equinox or Chevy Cruze and other great prizes.  The league was able to keep all of the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales.

October 2011- Breast Cancer Walk
This was so much fun and a beautiful day weather wise for October.  Brooke Steinbring from Alexandria Motors walked in the Breast Cancer walk around Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis with 5 of her girlfriends.

November 2011- Toy Drive benefiting Jingle Bells of Alexandria
We love all the events and fundraisers we do, but if we are able to pick a favorite this one is it.  For every vehicle sold new and used we go out and purchase $20 worth of toys.  We purchase all the toys locally and try to spread the business around to all the different retailers in town that sell toys and books.  We did this for the first time in 2010 and filled 1 bed of a Chevy Silverado full of toys, this year we filled a truck and a half.  The toys are then delivered to the great folks from the Alexandria Jaycees and they deliver the toys as part of their Jingle Bells event.

December 2011- Food Drive benefiting Alexandria Food Shelf
During the month of December for every vehicle sold new or used we donated $20 to the Alexandria Food Shelf.  We also had some customers drop off some food which we also donated.

We would like to thank everyone who helped make all of these promotions successful.  We will be running many of them again this year in 2012 and we will also be adding some as well.  They are all so much fun and we are so pleased that we are able to help out the community.  We will post all of our current community involvement activities on our Facebook page and our website.

A little mystery in the Chevy Bowtie

By alexandriamotorco | Posted in Alexandria Motors, Chevrolet, History, Uncategorized on Monday, September 12th, 2011 at 7:41 PM

As Chevrolet gets ready to celebrate its Centennial this November we look back on how Chevrolet became an American legend.  The Chevy Bowite is recognized today globally and was introduced by Chevrolet co-found William C. Durant in late 1913.  Yet still today, how it came to be synonymous with the brand is open to wide interpretation.

Durant’s version of how the logo came into existence is well-known.  The long-accepted story, confirmed by Durant himself, was that it was inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel.  According to The Chevrolet Story of 1961, an offical company publication issued in celebration of Chevrolet’s 50th anniversary, “It originated in Durant’s imagination when, as a world traveler in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infinity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel.  He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends, with the thought that it would make a good nameplate for a car.”

However, conflicting accounts have emerged, ach of which is plausible enough to deepen the mystery and suggest it may never be solved.  Two of the alternate origins come from within the Durant family  itself.

In 1929, Duran’ts daughter, Margery, published a book entitled, My Father.  In it, she told how Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table.  “I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day,” she wrote.

More than half a century later, another Bowtie origin was recounted in a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine based on a 13-year-old interview with Durant’s widow, Catherine.  She recalled how she and her husband were on holiday in Hot Springs, Va., in 1912.  While reading a newspaper in thier hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.”  Unfortunately, at the time, Mrs. Durant didn’t clarify what the motif was or how it was used.

That nugget of information ispired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out is validity.  In a Nov. 12, 1911 edition of The Constitituion  newspaper, published in Atlanta, an advertisement appeared from by the Southern Compressed Coal Company for “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires.  The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon.  Did Durant and his wife see the same ad- or one similar- the following year a fre states to the north?  The date of the paper was just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Co.

One other explanation attributes the design to a stylized version of the cross of the Swiss flag.  Louis Chevrolet was born in Switzerland at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchatel, to French parents, on Christmas Day 1878.

Whichever origin is true, within a few years, the bowtie would emerge as the definitive Chevrolet logo.  An October 2, 1913 edition of  The Washington Post  seems, so far, to be the earliest known example of the symbol being used to advertise the brand.  “Look for this nameplate” the ad proclaims above the emblem.  Chevrolet customers have been doing so ever since.

Many variations in coloring and detail of the Chevrolet bowtie have come and gone over the decades since its introduction in late 1913, but the essential shape has never changed.  In 2004, Chevrolet began to phase in the gold bowtie that today serves as the brand identity for all of its car and trucks marketed globally.  the move reinforced the strength of what was already one of the most-recognized automotive emblems in the world.  More than 4.25 million Chevrolet’s were sold in more than 120 countries and regions during 2010.

So as you drive your Chevrolet car or truck just know you can do it with a little bit of mystery……
